Located on the outskirts of Bordeaux, in the town ofPessac, THEChâteau Haut-Brionis situated on two important Quaternary Günzian gravel outcrops, rich in quartz, and bordered by two streams, the Peugue and the Serpent. The subsoil is composed of clay and sand. The 51-hectare estate, in a single block, is planted with red grape varieties for 48 hectares (Merlot,Cabernet Sauvignon,Cabernet FrancAndPetit Verdot) and 3 hectares of white grape varieties (SémillonAndSauvignon). The vines are 40 years old on average.

Four families have succeeded one another since the 16th century and distinguished themselves through numerous innovations, which not only found success but also became widespread in the Bordeaux and then global wine regions. For example, it was in this château that Claret, the benchmark style for the world's great red wines, was invented: long maceration and aging, topping up and racking, resulting in wines that improve with age. It was also at Haut-Brion that bottling at the château was invented.
