A Heritage of Vieilles Vignes
THE domaine exploits approximately 4.5 hectares, a "garden" format which allows Stéphane Magnien to intervene with surgical precision on each plot.
-
The age of the vines: THE domaine prides itself on owning very old vines (often planted by Stéphane's grandfather), some of which have never been exposed to modern clones (massal selection).
-
The Terroirs: Although focused on Morey-Saint-Denis, THE domaine possesses jewels in the neighboring villages:
-
Morey-Saint-Denis : In particular, the 1er Cru "Les Faconnières" and "Les Monts Luisants".
-
Chambolle-Musigny : For wines of absolute finesse (1er Cru "The Paths").
-
Grands Crus: Mythical plots in Clos of the Rock And Charmes-Chambertin.
-
A "Whispering" Viticulture
Stéphane Magnien practices a form of farming very close to organic (without systematic certification), prioritizing soil work and observation:
-
Minimal intervention: The winemaking process is gentle, with minimal handling of the grapes to avoid compromising the fruit's delicate character.
-
Nuanced breeding: The use of new oak barrels is extremely limited (rarely more than 10 to 15% for Premier Cru wines). The aim is for the wood to support the structure without ever overpowering the aromatics.
The Style of the Wines: Crystalline Purity
If you are looking for the vibration of Pinot NoirYou're in the right place:
-
The Fruit: Aromas of small red cherry, raspberry and old rose.
-
The Texture: The tannins are remarkably silky, often described as "airy".
-
Length: The wines linger with very fine mineral and spicy notes.
Wines not to be missed
Morey-Saint-Denis "Grain de Millande"
Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru "The Faconnières"
Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
The expert's opinion: Stéphane Magnien is one of those winemakers who "listen" to their wine. His wines sometimes require a little patience in the bottle to reveal their full complexity, but they then offer an emotion that is only found in the very best.
