History of the Estate Tesseron Estate Pym-Rae

the story of Tesseron Estate Pym-Rae

The History of the Pym-Rae Estate and its Owners

The story ofPym-Rae domainis intimately linked to two great figures in wine. Initially, this Napa Valley vineyard embodied the vision of Robin Williams, the famous American actor, who acquired the property in the 1990s. Passionate about viticulture, he named the estate in memory of his children:PymAndRaeAfter his death, the property was taken over in 2016 by the family.Tesseron, also owner of the legendary Château Pontet-Canet in Pauillac, France.

The arrival of Alfred and Justine Tesseron marked a major turning point. Accustomed to the high standards of excellence of Bordeaux's great classified growths, they set out to elevate this Californian terroir by applying the same rigor and respect for nature. Their goal: to produce a wine that was not simply a "California wine," but a universal cuvée, imbued with identity and refinement. In just a few years, Pym-Rae has established itself as a leading name among Napa Valley's great wines, renowned for its rarity and authenticity.

The Vineyard and Unique Terroir of Napa Valley

The vineyardPym-Raeextends over approximately20 hectaresnestled on the heights ofMount Veeder, one of the most prestigious appellations in Napa Valley. Nearly500 meters altitudeThe vines benefit from a cooler climate than the valley, with a marked temperature difference between day and night. This microclimate promotes a slow and balanced ripening of the grapes, resulting in wines of great aromatic complexity and remarkable freshness.

The volcanic and clay-limestone soil of Mont Veeder provides structure and minerality, essential characteristics for wines designed for aging. The vineyard is primarily planted withCabernet Sauvignon, the king of Napa grape varieties, complemented byMerlotand of theCabernet Franc, in a very Bordeaux spirit.

The Tesseron family has adopted an environmentally friendly approach to viticulture, inspired by biodynamic principles. Interventions in the vineyards are minimized, promoting natural balance and biodiversity. This farming method yields grapes of exceptional quality, concentrated in aromas and freshness, capable of faithfully expressing the soul of the Californian terroir.

Winemaking, Aging and Typicality of Pym-Rae Wines

Winemaking atPym-RaeIt follows an artisanal philosophy, combining Bordeaux know-how with a Californian identity. The harvest is done by hand, with meticulous selection of the bunches. Fermentation takes place in concrete tanks, allowing for a gentle and natural extraction of tannins and aromas.

The aging process, a true signature of Maison Tesseron, takes place in French oak barrels, with a balanced proportion of new wood. This method brings complexity and refinement, while allowing the fruit to fully express itself. Pym-Rae wines are distinguished by a silky texture, an aromatic depth marked by notes of blackcurrant, black cherry, licorice, and tobacco, as well as a long and elegant finish.

The wines' distinctive character lies in their balance between power and finesse. Unlike some very opulent Californian wines, Pym-Rae offers a subtle and precise expression of the terroir, with excellent aging potential. Each vintage reveals a new facet of this exceptional vineyard, confirming its status as an iconic Napa Valley wine.
