The name of the wine contains the very essence of its quality: Costers: These are the steep schist slopes (local slate called llicorella) typical of Priorat. Here, mechanization is not possible; everything is done by hand or on muleback. Vinyes Velles: The vines used for this vintage were planted in 1902. They are centuries old and sink deep into the rock to draw moisture, producing tiny berries of unparalleled intensity. Thanks to the altitude of the Mas Doix plots in Poboleda (the coolest sector of the appellation), the wine retains a freshness (acidity) that balances its massive structure.

    Owner and history

The Doix family has been farming this land for five generations, but it was only in 1998 that they decided to create their own domaine to enhance their vieilles vignes instead of selling the grapes to the cooperative.

    Vinification and aging

Winemaking: The grapes are harvested by hand. An initial sorting is carried out before the delicate destemming. A second, rigorous sorting, berry by berry, is then performed on a sorting table. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks. After three weeks of maceration, the free-run juice is pressed, and only this free-run juice is retained. Once malolactic fermentation is complete, the wine is transferred to barrels.

Aging: 14 months, 50% in new barrels and 50% in second-year French oak barrels. Racking is carried out in the summer to prevent reduction and clarify the wine.

    The team's opinion

With the 2015 Doix from Celler Mas Doix, we reach the pinnacle of what Priorat (Catalonia) has to offer. It is a wine for "meditation," made from vines that have survived history and express the magnificent ruggedness of their terroir.
