Notes and pairings

Tasting notes

The 2021 Saumur Champigny Les Poyeux is distinguished by its deep ruby color with purplish highlights. The nose opens with notes of fresh red fruit and violet, underscored by a touch of smoke and minerality. On the palate, the attack is supple, the texture silky, and the whole reveals a lovely freshness balanced by a fine structure. The finish is long, flavorful, and carried by a persistent minerality, characteristic of the limestone terroir of Les Poyeux.

Food & wine pairings

Perfect with veal tenderloin, roast squab or vegetables stuffed with fresh herbs.

Producer

Producer

The Poyeux plot is situated on a limestone hillside with clay-sand soil, renowned for producing some of the finest red wines of Saumur Champigny. This unique terroir promotes slow and even ripening, ideal for Cabernet Franc. The vines are over 45 years old, cultivated organically with meticulous soil management, without herbicides or synthetic products. This approach allows the finesse and depth of the terroir to be expressed in each vintage.

Owner and history

Antoine Sanzay practices gentle winemaking, with spontaneous fermentations in concrete tanks. Extraction is controlled, by infusion, to preserve the finesse of the fruit. The Les Poyeux cuvée is then aged for 12 months in oak barrels that have previously held several wines, in order to add complexity and texture without masking the expression of the terroir. This meticulous work results in an elegant, pure wine, built for aging, true to the estate's DNA.

Vinification and aging

Antoine Sanzay, a self-taught and passionate winemaker, took over the family estate in 1999 after entrusting his grapes to the cooperative. Driven by a quest for excellence, he quickly chose to vinify his own wines, convinced by the richness of his terroir. His commitment to organic farming, his artisanal approach, and his intimate knowledge of the soil have made him a discreet yet admired figure. With patience and exacting standards, he has elevated his wines to the pinnacle of the Saumur Champigny appellation.
