Producer

Escarpment strives to produce wines that reflect the very essence of their terroir. Our historic vineyard, located on Te Muna Road, lies just a few minutes east of the village of Martinborough. Its 24 hectares of terraced land, composed of alluvial gravel, stretch along the banks of the Huangarua River. The vineyard soils are alluvial silts formed by the Huangarua River more than 20,000 years ago. Thanks to the thickness of the alluvial gravels that now cover these silts, the soil provides exceptional drainage, a crucial condition for cultivating and producing healthy, high-quality vines. Escarpment names its best Pinot Noirs after the vineyards from which the grapes are grown, rather than after the grape variety. The Single Vineyard Kupe, Pahi, Te Rehua, and Kiwa cuvées perfectly illustrate this philosophy with their elegance and distinctive character. Escarpment sources its grapes from its own growers as well as from winegrowers in the Martinborough area. We are fortunate to have long-standing and established relationships with our growers, which is reflected in the quality of our wines.

Owner and history

The escarpment, this long, steep slope bordering a plateau, is our unique terroir in Martinborough. Vast expanses of sky stretch across the Wairarapa, and ancient alluvial soils plunge deep into the earth. Here, a natural balance reigns. At Domaine Escarpment, our ambition is to translate this balance into wines that reflect these exceptional assets, this very special terroir of Aotearoa, New Zealand. For 35 years, we have been crafting expressive wines from Martinborough's Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, and Pinot Gris. Shaped by winemaker Tim Bourne and winemaker Rowan Hoskins from grapes sourced exclusively from Martinborough vineyards, grown on legendary alluvial soils, these wines are distinguished by their structure, complexity, and fruity expression, reflecting their unique terroirs and the regional identity of Martinborough.

Vinification and aging

Winemaking at Escarpment is carried out with a minimalist approach, preserving the integrity of the aromas and the typicity of Pinot Noir. The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully sorted. Fermentation takes place in tanks, with gentle maceration to extract tannins and aromas. The aging process, the details of which are not disclosed, contributes to refining the wine's structure and complexity. Each step is executed with precision and passion, to create a red wine of exceptional quality, a true reflection of the Martinborough terroir.
