The origin of this wine is threefold: • The perimeter of the Enclosure. • Some plots of land initially considered suitable for producing Grand Vin may ultimately be incorporated into the Forts of Latour if their quality level justifies it during blending tastings. • Plots located outside the "Enclos", in the classified growth areas of Pauillac: On the one hand, Piñada, Petit Batailley and Saint-Anne, which belong to domaine for over a century and whose vines enjoy a high average age – nearly 40 years – synonymous with quality. On the other hand, a 7 ha parcel of land located in the commune of Artigues on gravel terraces and acquired in 2005. To which is added a set of parcels (approximately 5 ha) acquired in 2012. These scattered parcels of land present very different terroirs and thus offer more varied characteristics and aromatic profiles to the Forts de Latour depending on the vintage.

Owner and history

First Grand Cru Classé from Bordeaux in 1855 domaine of Château Latour is located in the heart of the Médoc, in the famous Pauillac appellation. Château Latour enjoys a worldwide reputation. The 96.5 hectares of the property benefit from exceptional terroir and location, on the edge of the Gironde estuary. THE Château Latour belongs to the holding company Artémis Domaines, which comprises 9 properties worldwide. Under the direction of Frédéric Engerer and Hélène Genin in the cellar and vineyard, the domaine has managed to maintain its heritage while innovating in its winemaking practices. The team's approach is based on respect for the terroir and a constant pursuit of quality, making Latour an example of modern winemaking while remaining true to its roots.

Vinification and aging

The Forts of Latour 2020 is the second vin of the mythical Château Latour (First Grand Cru Classé of Pauillac). Although it is technically a "second vin", it benefits from the same meticulous care and the same technical team as its big brother, which often places it on the level of many classified growths.

Both in the vineyard and in the winery, Les Forts de Latour is produced with the same care as the Grand Vin. The only notable difference, apart from its origin, is the proportion of new barrels - between 50 and 60% - used for its aging.

The assembly of the Forts of Latour may vary from year to year but there is a higher proportion of the Merlot grape variety (25 to 30%) compared to the proportions found in the Grand Vin.

The team's opinion

The 2020 vintage completes the exceptional 2018-2019-2020 trilogy. At Latour, The 2020 is often described as having the power of the 2018 but with the precision and elegance of the 2016. It is a wine of patience; even though it is technically "accessible" earlier than the Grand Vin, it needs a few years in the cellar to melt its tannins and reveal its full complexity.
