Tasting notes

This Napa Valley It reveals a deep and intense ruby color. On the nose, a complex bouquet of blackcurrant, blackberry, cedar notes, and sweet spices. On the palate, the attack is ample and silky, with present but elegant tannins. The finish is long and persistent, marked by fruity and slightly oaky aromas. A red wine of great finesse.

Food & wine pairings

It will perfectly complement grilled red meats, game and aged cheeses.

We have carefully selected the finest grapes from our iconic BV Ranches No. 1 and No. 2 vineyards. Originally planted by Georges de Latour At the beginning of the 20th century, these vineyards stretched across the western slopes of the Rutherford AOC. We have favored clonal selections 6, 4, 169, 7, and 8, which produce small berries with a high skin-to-juice ratio, essential for crafting intense, age-worthy wines. These vines are deeply rooted in the well-drained alluvial soils of Rutherford, a region considered one of the most prestigious in the Napa Valley for Cabernet Sauvignon.

Owner and history

Beaulieu Vineyard now belongs to the Treasury Wine Estates group, which perpetuates the tradition of excellence initiated by Georges de Latour. When André Tchelistcheff joined Beaulieu Vineyard in 1938, he tasted the private wine of the family of Latour, Named "Private Reserve," this wine, from the 1936 vintage, was so exceptional that Tchelitcheff insisted it be bottled and marketed as the flagship of the range. In 1940, Beaulieu Vineyard released the first vintage of Private Reserve, named in honor of its founder. This wine became the first cuvée of Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, a wine destined to become the first "cult" Cabernet of the Napa Valley. More than 70 years later, the Georges of Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon has become the benchmark for Cabernets of the Napa Valley and one of the most sought-after American wines.

Vinification and aging

In our state-of-the-art winery, dedicated exclusively to the Georges de Private Reserve Latour, Part of the wine fermented in new French oak barrels for early integration and a dense, rich texture. The remainder fermented in stainless steel and concrete tanks to preserve the fruit's freshness. After extended skin contact, the wine was pressed and returned to barrels for malolactic fermentation and aging. A small amount of Petit Verdot was blended with Cabernet Sauvignon to enhance the wine's aromas and flavors. This rigorous barrel aging process is essential to the exceptional quality of this wine. We work closely with a select number of cooperages to ensure the style and consistency of our barrels.

The team's opinion

The Beaulieu Vineyard (BV) Georges de Latour Private Reserve 2020 is a remarkable success, the fruit of one of the most difficult vintages of the Napa Valley. Although the 2020 season was marked by fires and extreme heat, this iconic BV wine remains a beacon of hope, having been harvested early enough to avoid the smoky taste that marred many other great Napa red wines.
