It is through one of those mysteries of geology that, on this plateau, southeast of Pomerol, a curious accident brought to the surface a long streak of gravel, a rare earth upon which the vineyard rests. Château The Gospel. Its location is quite privileged: bordered to the north by the vineyards of Château Petrus, he is not separated from Cheval Blanc In Saint-Émilion, to the south, it is accessible only by a secondary road. Spread across 22 hectares, 43 parcels evoke their surroundings (Maison, Cuvier), their specific lieu-dit (Catusseau, Chantecaille, Jean Faure), or their configuration (La Pointe). This parcel system is based on three main terroir units. First, pelosols, characterized by swelling clays at the summit of the plateau. Then, soils with a gravelly-clay to gravelly-sandy texture. Finally, in the lower part of the appellation, predominantly sandy soils. The grape varieties planted at L'Évangile are predominantly Merlot (79%), complemented by Cabernet Franc (20%) and a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon (1%).

Owner and history

THE Château the Gospel is a domaine A wine estate located in the Pomerol appellation, on what is known as the "Right Bank" of the Bordeaux wine region – the area extending north of the Dordogne River and encompassing Pomerol, Saint-Émilion, and their satellite appellations. True to the grape varieties characteristic of this area, the Château The Gospel produces a predominantly Merlot wine, which nevertheless regularly ranks among the best rated in the Pomerol appellation. THE domaine It was acquired by the Léglise family in the 18th century and changed hands several times before being bought in 1990 by Domaines Barons de Rothschild, owners of the Château Lafite Rothschild.

Vinification and aging

In the winery, research and work intertwine and are carried out with subtlety, never forgetting the raw material provided by the vines. L'Évangile is also a table always set to welcome its guests, whether curious or experts, around a ribeye steak grilled over the vine shoots of those same vines. And of course, a wine. A great wine of balance, powerful and rounded, sharp and smooth.

Château L'Évangile is also the first of the Barons de Rothschild Lafite estates to be farmed organically. All the vines have been replanted and are learning to adapt.

The team's opinion

THE Château The Gospel 2025 is in keeping with the refined and organic style instilled by Juliette Couderc and the teams at Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite). As a preview, the 2025 vintage stands out for its textbook balance: the aromatic brilliance of the fruit, the characteristic tension of the Cabernets from the Pomerol plateau, and a silky texture brought by the great Merlots on clay soils.
