Notes and pairings

Food & wine pairings

The 2015 vintage has a more "savory" dimension and is less purely fruity than recent vintages, making it ideal for:

  1. Leg of lamb with rosemary (the classic pairing suggested by sommeliers for this vintage).
  2. Small game feathered.
  3. Beef Short Ribs braised in red wine.
  4. A platter of Iberian charcuterie (the peppery notes of the wine will complement the richness of the ham).

Producer

The 160 hectares of vineyards are spread across the Alexander Valley, Russian River Valley, and Dry Creek Valley. Ted Seghesio is the winemaker, and the winery is located at the confluence of these three wine regions, in Healdsburg. The range, heavily focused on the Zinfandel grape, is produced primarily from the family vineyard, which includes the first plot planted by the ancestor in 1895. The grape variety covers approximately 100 hectares, including very vieilles vignes (90 years old) grown in goblet style in the Alexander and Dry Creek valleys. Small touches of secondary grape varieties (including Petite Sirah or Durif) sometimes complete the blends.

Owner and history

The story of this family, originally from Piedmont, Italy, exemplifies a whole chapter in the history of California wine. Edoardo Seghesio left his native Piedmont and his family vineyard in 1886. He became chief winemaker for a group of Italian-Swiss winemakers in Sonoma, then planted his first Zinfandel vines in Alexander Valley in 1895. Since then, four generations of the family have cultivated the vineyard, which today covers some 160 hectares. Seghesio built its reputation on its wines and its expertise in Zinfandel, which achieves an expression with few equals in California. Olive production is also part of the Italian tradition, which is very much alive here, as the winery is also a welcoming place focused on gastronomy.
