Owner and history

Rockford Wines is a domaine Based in Australia's iconic Barossa Valley, Rockford was founded in the early 1980s by Robert O'Callaghan and is now one of Australia's most prestigious wineries. O'Callaghan began as a winemaking apprentice in 1965 at Seppelts in Rutherglen, Victoria. In 1971, he moved west to Barossa and purchased 2 hectares (5 acres) of land. He planted vines and built a winery in the style of an 1850s stone cottage on the property. Rockford's inaugural vintage was in 1984. In addition to its small estate vineyard, Rockford partners with several independent winemakers around Barossa, with vineyards in Kalimna, Ebenezer, Moppa Springs, the Eden Valley, and central Barossa. This gives Rockford a wide variety of soil types, microclimates, and altitudes for its grapes, allowing for a greater degree of control in the cellar. Many vines are planted on their own rootstocks and are between 60 and 100 years old, resulting in intense and concentrated grapes that translate into the wines.

Vinification and aging

Winemaking at Rockford is a meticulous process, carried out with respect for tradition. The grapes are harvested by hand, carefully sorted, and then fermented in open vats. Aging takes place in French oak barrels, where the wine refines its structure and develops its aromatic complexity. domaine The winery favors a minimalist approach, intervening as little as possible to preserve the integrity of the fruit and the expression of the terroir. Each step is carried out with meticulous care to create wines of exceptional quality.
