The story of Château Figeac dates back to the 2nd century. The Figeacus family owned a Gallo-Roman villa on the land of the present-day château. She gave her name to the château.
The wine-growing turning point of domaine begins thanks to the acquisition of the château and the vineyard by the Manoncourt family in 1892. Arrived at domaine in 1943, Thierry Manoncourt, trained as an oenologist, he realizes the enormous potential of château situated on 3 gravelly hillocks which form an exceptional terroir. After a meticulous study of the vineyard, he decided on a single grape variety for the appellation: 30% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc and 35% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Today, Madame Manoncourt and his daughters brilliantly manage the Château Figeac. THE domaine is led by Frédéric Faye, brilliant agricultural engineer. The objective set is clear: to modernize the tools, innovate and maintain the level of excellence demanded by the family.
Exceptional terroir for producing dream wines
Located to the west of the appellation Saint-Emilion, next to Pomerol, THE Château Figeac possesses a remarkable terroir. The 40 hectares of vines are situated on soils similar to those of the Château Cheval Blanc, First Grand Cru Classé A. These soils, being relatively infertile, naturally limit yields and allow for concentration and high quality in the grapes. The château relies on a farming method that respects nature. Since 2012, Michel Rolland has provided his invaluable advice to best express the exceptional and complex terroir present at Château Figeac.
The style of Château Figeac This is a wine of distinguished character, which expresses its full potential after several years or even decades of aging in the cellar. It is unique and possesses a rich aromatic profile. Its remarkable freshness lends it all its elegance. Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure and a floral touch, Cabernet Franc contributes the finesse and tannins necessary for great wines meant for aging, and Merlot brings its elegance and roundness. Overall, the average prices of Château Figeac have made significant progress for the 2012 to 2014 vintages. It is still too early to consider the 2015 vintage which has only just been bottled.
The 2009 and 2010 vintages are exceptional and were released en primeur at a relatively high price (see table below). The 2009 vintage seems to be just beginning to show an upward trend. 2010, on the other hand, is a vintage with excellent aging potential and a very high en primeur price. It will need time to fully develop!
