Grands Vins Sud-Américains par la Place de Bordeaux

Great South American Wines by Place de Bordeaux

When the Southern Cone conquers Bordeaux: the surge of iconic South American wines in September

Every year, September marks an event that has become essential for fine wine enthusiasts: the launch of the " Great Wines Outside Bordeaux "by the Place de Bordeaux. Historically dedicated to the jewels of the Gironde vineyards, the oldest wine exchange in the world is opening its powerful trading network to global icons. Among them, the South American triad — Chile, Argentina and Uruguay — has established itself as one of the major pillars of these back-to-school marketing campaigns.

Chile, a pioneer in l'aventure international

Chile is the founding architect of this bridge between Bordeaux and the New World. As early as 1998, Almaviva (resulting from the visionary alliance between Baronie Philippe de Rothschild and Concha y Toro) became the very first foreign wine distributed by Bordeaux merchants.

In its wake, other Chilean icons joined the ranks of the Plaza:

  • Seña And Viñedo Chadwick Led by Eduardo Chadwick, these exceptional Cabernet Sauvignons from the Maipo Valley rival the greatest classified growths of the Médoc.
  • Clos Apalta : Blend dominated by Carménère in the heart of the Colchagua Valley, renowned for its aromatic power and velvety texture.

Argentina and the excellence of its high-altitude terroirs

On the Argentinian side, the arrival on the Place de Bordeaux has allowed malbec and the terroirs of the Uco valley to rise to the rank of global luxury icons.

  • Cheval des Andes : Fruit of the union between the prestigious Château Cheval Blanc and Terrazas de los Andes, this high-altitude wine combines Bordeaux's blending expertise with the vibrant fruit of Mendoza.
  • Catena Zapata The pioneering Argentine family presents its exceptional single-vineyard wines there, in particular Adrianna Vineyard Mundus Bacillus Terrae, a Malbec from a high-altitude limestone terroir with great freshness and mineral tension.
  • Viña Cobos (Cobos Malbec): Produced by Paul Hobbs, this wine demonstrates all the richness and depth of Argentinian terroirs.

Uruguay and the Garzón phenomenon

As the sole representative of its country on the Place de Bordeaux, Uruguay shines thanks to a pioneering property: the Bodega Garzón.

  • Balasto Its flagship cuvée — a blend structured around Tannat, complemented by Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot — comes from soils of decomposed granite (the ballastswept by the Atlantic sea breezes. This vintage of singular elegance proves that Uruguay has its rightful place among the world's wine elite.

A guarantee of prestige and global reach

For these Southern Cone estates, entrusting their September allocations to the Place de Bordeaux is a strategic step: it guarantees them immediate presence on the tables of the finest restaurants and in the cellars of collectors around the globe. For wine lovers, September is the perfect opportunity to discover the freshness, precision, and incredible diversity of South American terroirs through the lens of Bordeaux excellence.
