Many owners for a single wine

The nameCalonIt comes from a medieval boat that was used at the time to transport wood from one bank of the Gironde to the other.Château Calon-SégurIt had many owners after the conquest of Guyenne, including the Albret family, Sir Jean de Lur, Pierre de Marsan, and Gasq. Then, in the 18th century, Marquis Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur married Madame de Gasq and added his name to that of Calon. The Marquis was already the owner of theChâteau LafiteAndChâteau LatourHe used to say “I make wine in Lafite and Latour, but my heart is in Calon“,” these words are still engraved today on the castle's emblem. George Capbern Gasqueton bought the estate in 1894 with his uncle Charles Hanappier. From the 19th century until 2012, the Château remained in the Capbern Gasqueton family.

Today it is the groupCrédit Mutuel Arkéaand its subsidiary Suravenir Assurances, which manages the estate. With this acquisition, Château Calon-Ségur underwent extensive renovations and aNice climb.

The land of Saint-Estèphe

The origin of an exceptional wine

Located in the northern part of the appellation and at the gates of the village ofSaint-Estèphe, THEChâteau Calon-Ségurhas a single, enclosed vineyard surrounding the château on a wonderfulgravelly rumpThe vines draw their nutrients from deep within a terroir typical of theMedoc, composed of a layer of gravel, itself resting on a clay base. In addition, there are the 28 hectares of Château Capbern-Gasqueton which belong to the same estate.

Under the leadership of Vincent Millet, the vineyard has been undergoing a significant restructuring since 2006, which will continue until 2025 and includes the following program:

• a densification of the vines;
• the replanting ofcabernet sauvignon;
• the improvement of plant heritage;
• soil cultivation and a reorientation of the vineyards.

Today the vineyard extends over94 hectaresThe vines are planted with three-quarters Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, and are on average 22 years old. The harvest is carried out by hand by the château's team. The grapes are then sorted and transported to the winery.

Character and know-how

THEChâteau Calon-Ségurproduces the following wines: theMarquis de Calon-Ségur(second wine), theSaint-Estèphe de Calonand theCapbern CastleThe winemaking process is traditional, and the wine is aged for 18 to 20 months in 100% new oak barrels. Vintages after 2013 are vinified in the new gravity-flow, plot-by-plot winery.

The work carried out in the winery and vineyards since 2006 has revealed excellent results on thewine qualityof the Château. Indeed, in 2015, critics awarded Château Calon-Ségur a higher score than Montrose and Cos d'Estournel – the two great elites of the appellation. The substance of Château Calon-Ségur is noble and powerful, concentrated, finely extracted but not overripe. This Saint-Estèphe offers aromas of black fruit, spices, and notes of undergrowth. It is awine for long agingwhich can age for more than 20 years in a cellar.
