In 1772, Philippe Clicquot, a textile merchant from Reims, founded the Champagne House. When his son François Clicquot died suddenly in 1805, Barbe Nicole Ponsardin Clicquot, his young widow of 27, took over the reins of the House – a remarkable feat in the 19th century for this audacious and passionate woman! At a time when women's rights were restricted, she was determined to be "independent." Driven by an uncompromising vision and an inventive spirit, Madame Clicquot created the first vintage Champagne in 1810. A few years later, in 1816, she invented the riddling rack, and then in 1818 she produced the first blended rosé Champagne. Veuve Clicquot is defined by the pursuit of excellence, the love of Pinot Noir, and the art of aging. From harvest to shipping, Veuve Clicquot scrupulously respects Madame Clicquot's instructions: "Our wines must seduce both the palate and the eyes." Madame Clicquot bequeathed to the House her optimism, her quest for excellence, her audacity and her spirit of innovation which continue to inspire us today.
