The Saint-Joseph appellation was established in 1956 in the Rhône Valley, a region where winemaking has existed since antiquity. Highly prized by Charlemagne, Saint-Joseph wines have enjoyed great success throughout Europe. The appellation primarily produces very aromatic red wines, along with a few white wines that have brought renown to great winemakers such as Yves Cuilleron. The Saint-Joseph appellation is located in the Northern Rhône Valley , on the right bank of the Rhône River. This AOC spans 26 communes: 23 in the Ardèche and 3 in the Loire. The vineyards are cultivated on terraces, benefiting from a temperate climate and abundant sunshine. The soil is primarily granitic, with variations that contribute to the appellation's diversity. The wines produced are predominantly red, made from Syrah , but some white wines are also produced from Roussanne and Marsanne .

Yves Cuilleron

The Cuilleron estate was established in 1920: Yves Cuilleron represents the third generation of winemakers. Rejecting all dogma, his vision is simple: to produce the best possible grapes. Passion, high standards, and common sense are therefore present at every stage, from vine to bottle. A total of 75 hectares of vines are cultivated using sustainable farming practices .

Yves Cuilleron produces several wines under the Saint-Joseph appellation . His red wines include “Les Pierres Sèches,” “Cavanos,” and “Les Serines,” as well as the very limited-production Bourasseau cuvée. His white wines include “Le Lombard” and “Lyséras,” along with a single-vineyard selection, “Lieu-dit Digue.”

Combier Estate

Since 1970, Laurent Combier has managed his estate organically, with a strong emphasis on biodynamic principles. This pioneer cultivates 25 hectares of vines and an equal amount of fruit trees. Clos des Grives is the heart of the estate: 9.5 hectares of vines, some of which are 75 years old, produce the most prestigious red and white wines.

The Saint-Joseph reds are 100% Syrah . While the first vintage reveals itself to be fruity and spicy after 12 months of aging, “Cap Nord” is more mineral. The northeast exposure of the vines fully expresses its typicity after 4 years of aging.
