The presence of the Ciron, a tributary of the Garonne, is crucial for the over-ripening of the grapes: responsible for the morning mists in autumn, it encourages the gradual development of Botrytis cinerea. The vines thus patiently await, each year, the progressive invasion of this noble fungus. The harvest, according to tradition, takes place in successive passes, each grape being picked only when perfectly ripe. Depending on the year, four to eight passes by hand are necessary. The meticulous care given to the grapes in the vineyard naturally extends to the winery: sorting table, rigorous selection, and gentle pressing. Each batch is vinified in barrels according to Sauternes tradition. The wines are aged for 18 months in oak barrels, 40 to 50% of which are new each year. In order to best meet the needs of our customers, the wines of Château Rayne Vigneau (2014 vintage, in AOC Sauternes and Bordeaux Blanc Sec) are registered VEGAN.

Owner and history

The Rayne Vigneau vineyard sits on a magnificent ridge overlooking the Sauternes region since the creation of the domaine at the beginning of the 17th century. The Vigneau de Bommes referred to both the vineyard and the Château, The Lordship and the Vigneau family, who were its first holders. Gabriel de Vigneau appears in writings as early as 1635. His son Étienne married Jeanne Sauvage, daughter of the lord. d'Yquem, and personally took over the management of the property in 1681. Madame de Rayne, née Catherine de Pontac, would buy the domaine du Vigneau in 1834. Today, the Château Rayne Vigneau, acquired by the Trésor du Patrimoine group, embodies a sure value of the appellation claiming, vintage after vintage, a style full of intensity, length and freshness.

Vinification and aging

The vineyard extends over 84 hectares in a single block on a vast ridge overlooking the Sauternes region. Its subsoil of sandy gravel, resting on a clay base, reveals astonishing riches: agates, sapphires, rock crystals, harbingers of a precious wine.

The vines, averaging 30 years old, are divided between Sémillon (74%) and Sauvignon Blanc (24%), which brings the typical freshness note of the wines of the Château, and Muscadelle (2%).

Yields range from 10 to 15 hectolitres per hectare depending on the vintage.
