The Loire Valley boasts numerous appellations, including Muscadet, Vouvray, Coteaux du Layon, and Quarts de Chaume in Touraine; Saumur Champigny in Anjou; and Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé to the east. The great wines of the Loire are primarily produced from Cabernet Franc and Gamay grapes for red wines, and Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc for dry and sweet white wines. The vineyards, often situated on hillsides overlooking the Loire River, are frequently planted in sandy or tuffeau soils. Among the finest Loire winemakers are Alphonse Mellot and Thierry Germain.
