The Fonseca vineyard stretches across the steep slopes of the Douro Valley, an exceptional terroir listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The soils are primarily composed of schist, a metamorphic rock that imparts a unique minerality to the wines. climat The climate is hot and dry in summer, and cold and rainy in winter – ideal conditions for growing vines. The vineyards, often terraced, are ideally situated to capture maximum sunlight and promote optimal grape ripening. The Fonseca terroir is a true haven of biodiversity, where vines thrive alongside protected flora and fauna.

Owner and history

Fonseca Port belongs to the Taylor Fladgate Group, one of the leading producers of Port wine. The Fladgate family has been at the helm of this group for several generations, perpetuating an ancestral savoir-faire. The Taylor Fladgate Group also owns other prestigious Port houses, such as Taylor's and Croft. The group's objective is to produce exceptional Ports, respecting traditions and showcasing the terroir of the Douro Valley. The passion and expertise of the Fladgate family are reflected in every bottle of Fonseca.

Vinification and aging

The Fonseca Port 2000 is made using traditional methods. The grapes are foot-trodden in lagares, stone vats, to gently extract the aromas and tannins. Fermentation is stopped by adding grape brandy, which helps retain some of the grapes' natural sugars. The wine is then aged in oak barrels for several years, where it develops its complexity and finesse. This aging takes place in the cool, humid cellars of Fonseca, in Vila Nova de Gaia, on the opposite bank of the Garonne from Porto.

The team's opinion

Fonseca 2000 is a Port of rare depth and elegance, a true invitation to contemplation and the pleasure of the senses.
