The grape varieties cultivated in this area can fully express their unique characteristics, as well as the exceptional qualities of the terroir. The estate covers 270 hectares (667 acres), of which 175 hectares (432 acres) are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and other more recently planted white grape varieties such as Vermentino, Ansonica, Viognier, and a small plot of Carménère. The soil, of medium consistency, is sandy and loamy, composed of clay and silica, and in places features a rich layer of bedrock.

Owner and history

THE domaine Mortelle is located in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma, near Castiglione della Pescaia, benefiting from an exceptional and fascinating location, both for the incomparable natural beauty of the region and for its historical and cultural heritage. The family Antinori has been established on this land for generations. A deed dated 1863 attests to their land ownership. It mentions the Poggio Franco plot, one of the best vineyards of the domaine, as well as other plots of land. Since 1999, the date of acquisition of the domaine, The family has dedicated itself to improving the vineyards and building a new winery, convinced that this region, which is gradually asserting itself on the Italian wine scene, holds great potential for the production of high-quality wines.

Vinification and aging

The grape bunches were carefully selected and hand-harvested into crates. The berries were then sorted a second time on sorting tables before being destemmed and gently crushed. The must was transferred by gravity into truncated stainless steel tanks where alcoholic fermentation took place at a controlled temperature of 28°C (82°F) with skin maceration for approximately 20 days. The wine was then aged in barrels for malolactic fermentation, followed by 16 months of aging in French oak barrels.
